A page-one guarantee is an agency's promise to get your website onto the first page of Google by a date, or your money back. Google itself says no one can guarantee a ranking, because nobody outside Google controls the results. The guarantee survives on small print: which search, which page, which location and what counts as page one.

An SEO guarantee is usually met by ranking you for a search nobody makes, often your own business name, and then pointing at the contract. The refund clause is rarely the problem. The year you lost is.

Short version: a promise nobody outside Google can make.
Why it matters for your business

Guaranteed for a search
nobody types.

A guarantee sounds like the safest option on the table, which is exactly why it is used. The mechanics are simple. The agency picks the keywords, so it picks ones with no competition and no customers: the clinic's name plus its street instead of "dentist near me". Page one arrives within weeks, the guarantee is honoured and the phone does not ring. If the chosen search is one people actually make, the guarantee is met instead by whatever gets there fastest, which is usually bought links, and the cost of those lands on your domain later.

Fair SEO does not come with a ranking guarantee, and the people doing it will say so plainly. What it comes with is a scope of work you can check, reporting on clicks and leads rather than positions alone and a retainer you can leave if the numbers do not move. Nothing on our price list carries a guarantee, and we would rather lose the sale than add one.

Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO lists ranking guarantees among the things to be wary of. When the company whose results are being guaranteed tells you the guarantee cannot be made, that is the end of the argument.

Example

A real estate agency
is guaranteed page one.

What the contract says

"We guarantee first-page Google rankings for ten agreed keywords within ninety days, or your money back." The ten keywords are listed in an appendix nobody read.

What happened

The ten agreed keywords included the agency's own name, its name plus "reviews", its street address and "estate agent" plus a suburb with a dozen houses in it. All ten reached page one. The one search that brings in sellers, "estate agents in" plus the city, was never on the list because its keyword difficulty made it unwinnable in ninety days. The guarantee was kept. The agency's enquiries did not change.

How to check it on your site

Four questions that expose the guarantee.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Ask which searches, then check the demand

Get the exact keyword list in writing. Search each one yourself in a private window and ask whether a customer would ever type it. Then look at impressions for similar terms in Search Console. A guarantee built on your own business name is worthless.

  2. Ask what page one means and where

Page one on a laptop in another country is not page one for a phone in your town. Ask whether it means the map pack, the organic results or either, in which location and on which device. Vagueness here is the escape hatch.

  3. Ask how they will get there

If the method is content, technical fixes and earned links, it cannot be guaranteed in ninety days and an honest agency will say so. If it can be guaranteed, ask where the links are coming from and whether any of them are paid for.

  4. Read what happens on day ninety-one

Most guarantees roll into a standard retainer, and the refund applies only to the first period. Check whether leaving is possible, what notice it needs and whether the work done so far, including any links, stays with you.
