keyword difficulty

Definition

Keyword difficulty is a score, from 0 to 100, that an SEO tool gives a search to estimate how hard it would be to reach the first page. It is mostly a measure of how many links the pages ranking there have. It is a tool's guess, not a Google figure, and different tools give the same search different numbers.

The number is useful for comparing searches against each other, not for predicting a date. A difficulty of 30 does not mean three months. For a local business the score often overstates the problem, because it counts the big national sites on page one and ignores the map pack, where a small business competes on reviews and proximity rather than links.

Short version: a tool's estimate of the competition, not a promise or a timeline.
Why it matters for your business

The number that decides whether
a promise is believable.

When a proposal says it will rank you for 'personal injury lawyer' in a big city, keyword difficulty is the quickest way to check whether that is plausible. If the pages on page one are national firms with thousands of referring domains, a small firm with forty will not join them in six months, whatever the retainer. A high score is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to pick a more specific search.

Used well, the score builds a realistic plan: a few hard head terms as long-term goals, a spread of long-tail searches with low scores as the work for the first months. Used badly, it becomes a reason to target only easy terms nobody searches. Volume and difficulty have to be read together.

Be suspicious of any guarantee that does not mention difficulty at all. Either the agency has not looked at the competition, or the guaranteed searches are so specific that ranking for them means nothing.

Example

'dentist' versus
'emergency dentist Guildford Saturday'.

The head term

'dentist' scores near the top of the scale in most tools. Page one is the health service, directories and dental chains with tens of thousands of links. A single-site clinic will not rank nationally for it, and does not need to, because a patient in Guildford is not searching for 'dentist' without a place in mind.

The realistic set

'dentist Guildford' scores around the middle: local competitors with modest links, and the map pack above them all. 'emergency dentist Guildford Saturday' scores low: a handful of pages, most of them not answering the question. A clinic that writes the Saturday page, keeps its Business Profile complete and earns reviews can rank for the specific search in weeks and climb the local one over a year. The plan follows the scores. The scores do not set the deadline.

How to check it on your site

Four free ways to judge difficulty yourself.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Look at who is on page one

Search the phrase in a private window. If page one is national brands, government sites, directories and encyclopaedias, the search is hard. If it is businesses like yours, some with thin pages, it is winnable. This look is free and it is what the score is trying to summarise.

  2. Check the map pack

For a local search, see whether a map pack appears. If it does, the top three places are won on your Business Profile, reviews and distance, not on links, and the difficulty score for the web results is only half the picture.

  3. Use a free checker for a rough number

The free Keywords Everywhere checker or a tool's free tier will give a score and a volume for a handful of searches. Compare your target searches against each other rather than trusting any one number. The order of the scores is more reliable than the scores themselves.

  4. Compare with your own site's strength

Put your own domain into a free authority checker and do the same for the sites on page one. If theirs are two or three times yours, expect a long campaign or pick a narrower search. If they are similar, the gap is content and relevance, which is fixable sooner.
