Definition

A map pack is the block of three local businesses, shown with a map and star ratings, that Google places near the top of results for searches with local intent, such as "dentist near me". The three come from Google Business Profiles, not websites, and they take most of the calls those searches produce.

Tap "More places" and the full map list appears, but few people do. The pack is also called the local pack or the local 3-pack, and it changes with where the searcher is standing, so you can be in it on one street and out of it three streets away.

Short version: the three businesses on the map, and most of the calls.
Why it matters for your business

Three slots, every competitor
in town, one map.

The map pack is the most valuable space in local search and it is tiny. For a towing company, a dental clinic or a real estate agency, the difference between slot three and slot four is the difference between the phone ringing and not. The three slots are decided by relevance, distance and prominence, which in practice means the right categories, a location near the searcher and more good reviews, mentions and links than the businesses you are up against.

Because it is so visible, it is also what most local SEO pitches promise and what none of them can guarantee. Nobody can buy a slot. What an agency can do is fix the Google Business Profile, build the review habit and earn the local mentions that make Google more confident in you. If a proposal promises the map pack in a town where you have no address, it is promising something Google's rules do not allow.

Ads now sit above the pack in many searches, and AI answers sometimes draw from the same profiles. Both make a complete, well-reviewed profile matter more, not less, because the same data decides whether you are named at all.

Example

A towing company that was first
in the list and fourth on the map.

What the owner saw

A towing company whose website ranked first in the ordinary results for "towing" plus the town. Calls were still going to three competitors. The owner's teenager pointed out that on a phone, the map pack fills the whole first screen and the website link is below it.

What Google saw

A profile with the category "Auto repair shop", because the business also does repairs, and fourteen reviews. The three in the pack were all "Towing service" with between forty and ninety reviews each and a steady trickle of new ones. The website ranking was real, and almost nobody scrolled to it. Changing the primary category and asking every rescued driver for a review moved the business into the pack over the following months.

How to check it on your site

Four checks, each from a different street.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Search from where your customers are

On your phone, in a private window, search your main service with your town, then "near me", from your premises and from three points at the edge of your service area. Note who is in the pack each time. Good is you in all four. Normal is you near home and gone at the edges. Bad is never, which means a profile problem rather than a distance one.

  2. Compare categories with the three who are in

Tap each business in the pack and note the category under its name. If all three say "Towing service" and yours says "Auto repair shop", you are not even in the running. Match the primary category to the search you most want.

  3. Count reviews and recency

Look at the review count and the date of the latest review for each of the three, then yours. If they have three times your reviews and one from this week, the gap is reviews, and the fix is a habit, not a campaign.

  4. Check the profile is not hiding you

In the profile manager, confirm the address or service area is set, hours are current and the profile is not suspended or pending verification. A profile under review does not appear in the pack at all, however good it is.
