Local SEO is the part of search marketing aimed at people looking for a business near them, in a particular town or neighbourhood. It covers your Google Business Profile, the map pack, reviews, local directory mentions and the pages on your site that name the areas you serve. The goal is the phone call, not the click.

Google ranks local results on three things: how relevant you are to the search, how close you are to the searcher and how prominent you seem, which is reviews, mentions and links. Only the first and third are in your control, which is where the work goes.

Short version: being found by the people close enough to buy.
Why it matters for your business

The phone call comes
from the map, not the links.

For most service businesses, local search is the whole game. Someone with a cracked tooth or a flooded kitchen does not read three articles. They type what they need, look at the three businesses in the map pack, glance at the star ratings and call one. If you are not in those three, you are competing for the leftovers below, and anyone selling you "national SEO" is selling you the wrong thing.

Local SEO is also where small budgets go furthest. A dental clinic cannot outrank a national directory for "dentist", and does not need to. It needs to be the obvious choice for its suburb, which comes from a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews with replies, consistent local citations and a page for each area it serves. None of that needs a big site or a big fee.

Beware the two common oversells: a long list of "citations" from directories nobody uses, and a promise to rank you in towns where you have no address and no customers. Both show up as activity in a report and as nothing in your appointment book.

Example

A dental clinic that ranked
everywhere except next door.

What the clinic owner saw

A dental clinic with a good website ranking on page one for "cosmetic dentistry" nationally, after two years of content and links. The phone was quiet. Patients within two miles were booking at a clinic with a worse site.

What Google saw

A Google Business Profile that had never been fully claimed: wrong opening hours, no services listed, eleven reviews with no replies and a category of "Doctor" rather than "Dentist". The rival had ninety reviews, posted photos monthly and had a page for each neighbourhood. For every search with a place in it, or made from a phone nearby, Google showed the rival in the map pack and the clinic nowhere. The national rankings were real and almost worthless.

How to check it on your site

Four checks from your own phone.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Search like a patient, from the kerb

Stand outside your business, open Google on your phone in a private window and search for your service with the town name, then "near me". Do you appear in the map pack? Then search the same from a few streets away in each direction. Good is appearing in the three across your service area. Bad is appearing only when someone types your name.

  2. Open your Google Business Profile as a stranger

Search your business name and read the panel. Are the hours right? Is the category exactly what you do? Are services and photos filled in? Has every review had a reply? Each gap is something a competitor has filled. The twenty-minute profile fix walks through the panel in order.

  3. Check your details match everywhere

Search your business name together with your phone number. Every listing that comes up should show the same name, address and number in the same format. One old number on a directory is enough to make Google less sure who you are.

  4. Count the local pages on your site

Does your site have a page for each area you serve, with real content about that area, or one contact page with a list of town names? Google ranks pages, not lists. If a proposal promises rankings in eight towns, ask which eight pages they will be.
