Definition

A service area business is one that goes to its customers rather than serving them at its premises, such as a plumber, an electrician, a towing company or a cleaner. On Google Business Profile it hides its street address and instead lists the towns or postcodes it covers, and Google ranks it for local searches inside that area.

Google's rules are strict about it. A business that customers never visit must hide its address, and one that works from a home should not show that home as a shop. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons for a profile suspension.

Short version: you go to the customer, so Google ranks you by area, not by address.
Why it matters for your business

You cover twenty towns.
Google still has to pick one spot.

Hiding your address does not stop Google using it. Your ranking in the map pack is still strongest near the address Google has on file, even though nobody sees it, and it fades towards the edge of the service area you set. A plumber based at the north end of a city will appear for searches in the north and rarely in the south, however wide the service area is drawn. That is why two trades with identical reviews can have very different phones.

This is also where the most tempting shortcuts live. Setting up a profile at a mailbox, a friend's shop or a virtual office to "get a pin" in a second town is against the rules and is the main cause of the suspensions we see. The honest route is slower: a real page on your site for each area, with real work you did there, reviews that mention the town and mentions from local sites. It also works for the long term, which the fake pin does not.

Proposals that promise map pack rankings in every town on your list should be read carefully. Ask which towns are within a realistic radius of your real base, and what the plan is for the rest. Pages, reviews and local mentions are a fair answer. A second profile is not.

Example

A towing company covering
a county from one yard.

What the owner saw

A towing company with one yard on the edge of town and a service area set to the whole county. Calls came from the town and its near side. The far side of the county, forty minutes away and well inside the area it drew, almost never called. A competitor there with two trucks took it all.

What Google saw

One business with one location, whose relevance fades with distance like any other. The service area tells Google where you are willing to go, not that you are equally present everywhere in it. The fix the owner was offered, a second profile at a parking space in the far town, would have risked both profiles. The fix that worked was a page for the far town with photos of recoveries done there, reviews asking customers to mention where they were stranded and listings with the two local garages that call for recovery. The pin stayed where the trucks sleep.

How to check it on your site

Four checks for a business on wheels.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Check the address is hidden, honestly

In the profile manager, open the Location section. If customers never come to you, the address must be cleared and the service area set instead. If you have premises customers do visit, such as a showroom, keep the address and add the service area too. Either is fine. A home address shown as a shop is the one to fix today.

  2. Draw the area you actually serve

Google allows service areas up to roughly a two-hour drive, but setting the maximum does not widen where you rank. List the towns or postcodes you genuinely travel to. A tight, honest area with a page for each main town does more than a county-wide blob.

  3. Search from the far edge

On your phone, in a private window, search your service plus the name of the farthest town you cover. If you are not in the map pack there, that is normal, and it tells you where a local page and local reviews would earn their keep. If you are not in the pack even near your base, the problem is the profile, not the distance.

  4. Count your area pages

Open your website and count the pages written for specific towns, with content about work done there rather than a town name swapped into a template. Zero is common and is the biggest gap. One per main town you want calls from is the target, and Google treats thin copied pages as worse than none.
