A SERP is the search engine results page you see after typing a search. It once held ten blue links. Today it can stack ads, a map with three businesses, an AI-written summary, a box of questions, shopping tiles and videos before the first ordinary listing, so where your page sits on it matters as much as whether it ranks.

Every search has its own SERP. A search for 'plumber' in your town shows a map pack. A search for 'how to fix a dripping tap' shows videos and an AI summary. A search for a brand name shows that brand's site with extra links. Knowing which layout your customers get tells you which part of the page you are competing for.

Short version: the page of results, and the layout decides who gets the click.
Why it matters for your business

Position one is not
at the top of the page any more.

A monthly report that says you are 'ranked third' is only useful if you know what sits above third. For a local service that is usually ads and a map pack of three businesses, which means the third organic result is the ninth thing on the screen. On a phone it is below two full scrolls.

The SERP also tells you what Google thinks the searcher wants. If every result for your target search is a long guide, a sales page will struggle. If the page is a map and three listings, your Google Business Profile matters more than your website. Read the SERP before you brief anyone to write for it.

Some SERPs now answer the question on the page, in an AI Overview, so nobody clicks at all. If a report shows impressions rising while clicks fall, that layout change is often the reason, not anything your site did.

Example

The same trade, two different
pages of results.

'emergency plumber' on a phone

Three ads. A map with three plumbers, their star ratings and 'Open now'. Then a directory, then the first plumber's own website. The company that ranks first organically is the sixth thing on the screen, below the fold twice over.

'how to turn off water mains' on the same phone

An AI Overview with four steps, then a video from a hardware chain, then a 'People also ask' box, then articles. No map, no plumbers. A plumber who wrote a page answering this question can be cited in the AI summary and reach homeowners before the leak becomes an emergency, but it will rarely bring a call directly. Two SERPs, two different jobs: the first needs a strong Business Profile and reviews, the second needs one clear, useful page.

How to check it on your site

Four ways to read your own SERP.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Search in a private window on your phone

Open a private tab on your phone, since results on a computer leave out half of what customers see. Type your most important search. Count what appears before the first ordinary listing: ads, map, AI summary, questions. That count is how far down your 'position one' really is.

  2. Match the layout to the work

A map pack means your Business Profile, reviews and address consistency decide the outcome. Mostly guides and videos means you need a helpful page, not a sales page. Shopping tiles mean product feeds. If a proposal promises rankings without saying which layout it is targeting, ask.

  3. Compare it with Search Console

In Google Search Console, the Performance report shows average position per search. A position of 3 with a low click-through rate usually means something above you on the SERP is taking the clicks. Look at the live page to see what.

  4. Check it again in a month

SERP layouts change. A search that showed ten links in spring can show an AI Overview by autumn. Keep a screenshot of your three most important searches each month, so that a drop in clicks can be explained by what changed on the page rather than blamed on your site by default.
