impressions

Impressions are the number of times one of your pages appeared in a search result, whether or not anyone clicked it. Google counts one each time your listing is on a results page someone loaded, so a page far down on page four earns almost none while a page at position three earns one for every search.

An impression is not a visit. It is the chance of one. Impressions tell you how often Google is showing you; clicks tell you how often people took the offer. A report that celebrates impressions alone is reporting the size of the shop window, not what came through the door.

Short version: how often Google showed you, not how often anyone came.
Why it matters for your business

Impressions up, leads flat
is the oldest trick in the report.

Impressions are the easiest number in SEO to grow and the easiest to mistake for progress. Publish enough pages on enough loosely related searches and the count climbs every month. Nobody has to call you for that to happen. So when a monthly report leads with impressions and the phone is no busier than before, ask for the next two columns: clicks and click-through rate.

Used well, impressions are a diagnosis. Rising impressions with flat clicks means Google is testing your page lower down or your title is losing the click to the listings around it. Falling impressions on a page that used to bring enquiries means a ranking drop, a competitor or an indexing problem, and it is worth finding out which before the leads follow.

The number also decides what is worth working on. A page with thousands of impressions and a handful of clicks is already being shown. Rewriting its title tag and meta description is a one-hour job that can double its visits. That is a better use of a month than a new page that starts from zero.

Example

A letting agency whose impressions
tripled while enquiries stayed put.

What the report said

The agency's monthly SEO report showed impressions up sharply from spring to autumn, with a green arrow and the word growth. Enquiries through the site were the same as they had been all year.

What Search Console showed

Most of the new impressions came from one blog post about rental deposit rules that ranked near the bottom of page one across the whole country. People saw it, almost nobody clicked it and the few who did were tenants, not landlords. The agency's own town pages, the ones that bring landlords, had not moved. The report was true and told them nothing.

How to check it on your site

Four columns, one free report.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Open the Performance report

In Google Search Console, go to Performance and tick Total impressions alongside Total clicks. Set the date range to the last three months compared with the previous three. Both lines moving together is healthy. Impressions climbing while clicks stay flat is the pattern to investigate.

  2. Look at it by page, not by site

Switch to the Pages tab and sort by impressions. The pages with the most impressions and the fewest clicks are the ones being shown but passed over. Those are your cheapest wins: a better title and description, no new content needed.

  3. Check which searches earn them

Click a page, then the Queries tab. If the impressions come from searches your customers would never type, the growth is not worth having. If they come from the searches you want and the average position is eleven or twelve, the page is one push from page one.

  4. Count the enquiries next to it

Put the month's calls, forms and bookings beside the impressions chart. If one goes up and the other does not, the report is measuring the wrong thing. Ask whoever sends it to add conversions to the first page of it.
