conversion rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors to a page or a site who did the thing it exists for: a call, a form, a booking or a purchase. A hundred visitors and three enquiries is a three percent conversion rate. It is the number that connects traffic to money, and the one most monthly reports leave out.

A conversion is whatever you decide counts. For a plumber it is a phone call. For a Shopify store it is an order, and a newsletter sign-up might be a second, smaller one. The rate is only meaningful once those actions are being measured, which on most small business sites they are not.

Short version: of everyone who arrived, how many became a lead or a sale.
Why it matters for your business

Doubling traffic and doubling
conversion rate cost very different amounts.

Every lever in marketing ends here. Traffic times conversion rate equals enquiries. Agencies sell the first half because it is easier to show on a chart, but a site that converts twice as well needs half the visitors for the same number of customers, and visitors are the expensive part. Before paying for more traffic, it is worth knowing what the site does with the traffic it has.

The rate also exposes mismatches that nothing else does. A page can rank well, earn the click and still convert nobody, because the visitor wanted a price and found a brochure, or wanted to book and found a contact form that asks eleven questions. Search intent explains the first problem. The second is design.

Measured honestly, it is also how you judge the people you hire. A monthly report that shows impressions and clicks but never conversions is reporting activity. Ask for enquiries, the rate and the source they came from, and ask every month.

Example

A plumber with plenty of visitors
and a quiet phone.

What the owner saw

A local plumbing firm had a site that ranked well for emergency plumber searches across its service area. GA4 showed steady visitors every week. The owner still relied on word of mouth and a directory listing for most jobs.

Visitors: steady Calls from the website: unknown Forms: a few a month
What the pages were doing

The phone number was in the footer only, as plain text that could not be tapped. The contact form asked for a full address and a description before anyone could send it. On a phone, which is where someone with a burst pipe is searching, the first screen was a photo of a van. Making the number a tap-to-call button at the top of every page and cutting the form to a name and a number changed the rate without a single extra visitor. Nothing about the ranking moved.

How to check it on your site

Five checks, and the first is whether anyone is counting.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 5 checked on your site.

  1. Find out what is being measured

In GA4 go to Admin, then Events, and look for events marked as key events (older setups call them conversions). If the list is empty or only has the default page_view, nobody is counting your enquiries and every conversion rate you have been quoted was a guess.

  2. Count the actions yourself for a month

Calls, forms, bookings, orders. Write down where each came from when you can. Divide by the month's visitors in GA4. That is your real rate, and it is the baseline anything else is judged against.

  3. Walk the path on your own phone

Open your site on a phone from a search result and try to enquire as a customer would. Count the taps before you can call or submit. Each extra screen, field or pop-up is a place people leave. The number should be reachable from the first screen without scrolling.

  4. Compare pages, not the site

In GA4 Reports, Engagement, Pages and screens, look at key events by page. The pages that bring visitors but no actions are either serving the wrong intent or are missing the thing to do next. That list is your to-do list.

  5. Ask for it in writing

Whoever reports to you should show conversions and conversion rate by month and by source. If the report does not have them, ask for them to be added. It is a free change to the report and tells you more than the rest of it combined.

Conversion tracking is set up in month one of the SEO service, so every report after that shows enquiries, not just visitors. Fixes to the page itself are quoted from the price list, not on a call.
