GA4 is Google Analytics 4, the free tool from Google that records what people do on your website: where they came from, which pages they viewed, how long they stayed and whether they called, booked or bought. It replaced the older Universal Analytics in 2023 and counts everything as an event rather than a page view.

Out of the box it counts visits and page views and little else. The useful part, knowing which visits turned into enquiries, only works once someone marks your calls, forms and purchases as key events. Most small business sites have GA4 installed and that step never done, so the tool is running but not answering the question that matters.

Short version: google's free visitor counter, useful once someone tells it what counts.
Why it matters for your business

GA4 is installed on most sites
and set up on very few.

Nearly every quote for a website says analytics included. What that usually means is the GA4 snippet has been pasted in. It will count visitors from day one and look busy. It will not tell you how many of them called, because telling it that is a separate job that needs someone to decide what a conversion is on your site and wire each one up. Ask for that in writing when the site is being built, and ask to see it working before you sign off.

Set up properly, GA4 answers the questions that decide spend. Which source brings the enquiries: search, maps, referrals or the paid campaign. Which pages people see before they call. Where on the path to checkout a Shopify store loses them. Without it, every marketing decision is taken on feel and every agency report is unverifiable.

It is also the second half of Search Console. Search Console shows what happened on Google before the click. GA4 shows what happened on your site after it. You need both to connect a search to a sale.

Example

A towing company that could not say
where its calls came from.

Before

A roadside recovery firm had GA4 on its site for two years. It showed a few hundred visitors a month and the pages they viewed. Asked which marketing brought the calls, the owner guessed: probably the Google listing, maybe the leaflets.

Visitors: counted Calls: not counted Forms: not counted Source of each job: a guess
After an afternoon's setup

Tapping the phone number became an event. Submitting the callout form became an event. Both were marked as key events. Within a month GA4 could show that most calls came from organic search on a phone, late at night, from the emergency page, and that the leaflet campaign's web address had produced almost nothing. The leaflets stopped. The emergency page got the attention. Nothing was bought except an afternoon.

How to check it on your site

Four checks, all inside the free account.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Confirm it is actually collecting

Sign in at analytics.google.com. In Reports, Realtime, open your own site in another tab and watch for yourself to appear. If nothing shows, the tag is missing or broken, and everything you have been told about your traffic since is wrong.

  2. Look for key events

Go to Admin, then Events. Anything your business cares about, a phone tap, a form, a booking or a purchase, should be listed and switched on as a key event. If only page_view, session_start and scroll are there, the tool is counting visitors and nothing else.

  3. Read the traffic acquisition report

Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. This splits visitors and key events by channel: organic search, direct, referral, paid, organic social. The channel with the most key events, not the most visitors, is the one earning its keep.

  4. Check for double counting

If sessions look suspiciously high or engagement rate is oddly perfect, the tag may be firing twice, often once from a plugin and once from the theme. Realtime showing two page views for one load of yours is the giveaway. A developer can fix that in minutes.
