A Google Business Profile suspension is Google removing or hiding your business listing from Maps and Search because its systems believe the profile broke a guideline. A soft suspension leaves the listing visible but takes away your control of it. A hard suspension removes it entirely, along with its reviews, until you appeal and Google reinstates it.

Google rarely says which rule it thinks you broke. The usual triggers are an address shown for a business customers do not visit, keywords stuffed into the business name, a virtual office or mailbox used as a location, a sudden burst of edits and a category or website that does not match the business.

Short version: Google hid your listing and will not say why; here is where to look.
Why it matters for your business

One morning the phone
stops ringing.

A suspension is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a local business's marketing, because it takes the map pack position, the reviews and the direction requests away at once, usually without warning. For a dental clinic or a plumber that gets most calls from Maps, the phone goes quiet the same day. The website keeps ranking. It just no longer matters as much.

Suspensions are often caused by well-meant changes. An agency "optimising" the profile adds the town and the service to the business name, switches a home-based trade to show its address or sets up a second profile at a virtual office. Each is a known trigger. Reading the service area rules before touching the profile prevents most of them, and asking an agency which rules it checked before editing is a fair question.

The way back is an appeal with evidence, done once and done properly. Reappealing in anger with the same information gets the same result, and a profile that is suspended twice is far harder to recover. Fix the cause first, then appeal.

Example

A dental clinic that added
a few words to its name.

What the clinic saw

A clinic trading as "Riverside Dental" let a marketing contractor rename the profile to "Riverside Dental | Best Dentist in Richmond | Implants". Calls went up for a fortnight. Then the profile vanished from Maps, the reviews with it, and a red banner in the manager said the profile had been suspended.

Before: Riverside Dental After: Riverside Dental | Best Dentist in Richmond | Implants
What Google saw

A business name that did not match the name on the signage, the website or the registration. Keyword stuffing in the name is one of the clearest guideline breaches there is, and Google's systems catch it quickly. The clinic changed the name back to what is on the door. It gathered a photo of the sign, a utility bill and the registration document and filed one appeal explaining the change. The listing came back with its reviews a short while later. The contractor's fortnight of extra calls cost several weeks of none.

How to check it on your site

Four steps from suspended to reinstated.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Confirm it is a suspension, not a glitch

Sign in to the profile manager. A suspended profile shows a banner saying so, with a link to appeal. If there is no banner but you cannot find the listing, search your business name on Maps in a private window. A listing that shows but will not let you edit is a soft suspension. No banner and no listing may be a pending verification instead, which has its own path.

  2. Find the breach before you appeal

Read Google's guidelines for representing your business and go through your profile against them honestly: name exactly as on your signage, address shown only if customers visit, no virtual office, one profile per real location, category that matches what you do, website that matches the business name. Fix every mismatch first. Appealing with the breach still in place fails.

  3. Gather proof you are a real business at that place

Have ready a photo of your exterior signage, a photo of the inside, a utility bill or lease in the business name at that address, your business registration and, for a vehicle-based trade, a photo of the branded vehicle. Google asks for these in the appeal form, and sending them in one clear set is what separates a fast reinstatement from weeks of silence.

  4. Appeal once, then wait

Submit the appeal through the manager's link. Explain in plain words what was wrong and what you changed, with the documents attached. Then wait for the reply before doing anything else. Do not create a new profile in the meantime. Duplicate profiles for a suspended business make the original much harder to recover. The full article walks through the form and the waiting times.
