Definition

A retainer is a fixed monthly fee you pay an agency for ongoing work, usually SEO or content, in exchange for an agreed set of deliverables each month. It buys continuity: the same people working on your site every month instead of a fresh quote every time something needs doing.

The word says nothing about what the month contains. A fair retainer lists the work. A poor one lists only the fee and a promise to optimise. Judge it by the list, not by the word.

Short version: a fixed monthly fee; judge it by what the month contains.
Why it matters for your business

You are not buying hours.
You are buying a list.

Most SEO is sold on a retainer because the work is ongoing: pages get written, links get earned and Search Console gets read and acted on every month. That part is reasonable. The trouble starts when the retainer is the whole contract, with no scope of work behind it, so you pay the same fee whether the month produced six pages or a two-line email.

A fair retainer has four things in writing: the deliverables for a normal month, who does them, how progress is reported and how you leave. Twelve-month lock-ins, a fee that quietly rises after month three and reports made of impressions alone are the common red flags. Our own retainers are on the price list with the month's contents printed next to the fee, and they run month to month.

The cost of a vague retainer is not just the fee. It is the months a competitor spends doing real work while your site stands still and your invoice says otherwise.

Example

Two retainers for a dental clinic,
same fee, different months.

Proposal A

"Monthly SEO retainer. Ongoing optimisation, link building and reporting. Twelve-month minimum term." One line, no quantities, no names, no way to tell at the end of the month whether the work happened.

Proposal B

Two new service pages a month, one location page a quarter, a Google Business Profile post every week, a monthly report that lists calls and form fills, a named account lead and cancellation on thirty days' notice. Same fee. Only one of these can be checked against what was delivered, so only one of them is a real retainer.

How to check it on your site

Five checks before you sign.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 5 checked on your site.

  1. Ask for the month in writing

A good answer is a list of named deliverables with a quantity next to each: pages, posts, links, reports. A bad answer is a list of verbs: optimise, monitor, improve. If they cannot write the month down, they have not planned it.

  2. Read the exit clause

Find the notice period and any minimum term. Month to month or thirty days is fair for SEO, because results take months and you should be able to leave when they do not come. A twelve-month lock-in protects the agency, not you.

  3. Ask who does the work

Get a name and a role, not "our team". If the answer is an account manager who passes the work to someone else, you may be buying white-label SEO at a mark-up.

  4. Compare it with a public price list

An agency that publishes what a month costs and contains has nothing to hide in the quote. Put the proposal next to a public price list and see what the difference buys you.

  5. Check the first report against the list

After month one, tick off each promised deliverable. Anything missing without a reason is the pattern for the rest of the year, so raise it in month one, not month six.
