An AI citation is a reference inside an AI-generated answer that names your page as the source for a claim, with a link, a footnote or a source card beside the text. It is the AI-search equivalent of a top ranking: the person reading sees who was trusted, and the cited pages receive the clicks that follow.
Being cited is different from being mentioned. A mention is the assistant saying your name from memory, which can be wrong or out of date. A citation is a live link to a page it read, so you can see exactly what earned it and keep that page current.
Citations go to pages the engine fetched at answer time or indexed recently, so the page must be crawlable by the AI user agents (check robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended) and must render its text server-side. Passages that get cited are self-contained: a heading, a claim, the fact and its source, in 40 to 80 words, with a named author and a visible date.
Track them from the referrer: visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com appear in GA4 under Referral. Build a channel group for them so they stop hiding inside the generic referral bucket.
