AI Mode

Also called Google AI Mode

Definition

AI Mode is Google's chat-style search tab that answers in full sentences, follows up on your question and links to a handful of sources instead of listing ten blue links. It runs many searches behind the scenes, reads the pages it finds and writes one answer, so a business appears only if the system chose to name it.

It is different from an AI Overview. An Overview is a summary pinned above the normal results. AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation, and the person can keep asking. Search Console counts AI Mode impressions and clicks inside the ordinary web report, so you cannot yet see them separately.

Short version: search as a conversation, with sources instead of listings.
Why it matters for your business

Fewer listings, fewer clicks
and a shortlist you are on or not.

A normal results page gives twenty businesses a chance. An AI Mode answer to "which estate agent should I use to sell a flat in my area" names three or four, says why and moves on. If you are one of them, you have been recommended by Google in plain words. If you are not, the person may never learn you exist. There is no page two.

The pages AI Mode draws on are the ones that already rank well and say clear, checkable things: who you are, where you work, what you charge for and what clients say. Thin pages with slogans give it nothing to quote. This is why on-page SEO and real E-E-A-T signals matter more here, not less.

Be wary of anyone selling "AI Mode rankings". There is no rank to buy and the answer changes with every phrasing. What can be done is making your site the easiest one to cite, then checking the answers monthly.

Example

A real estate agency,
asked the long way round.

What the buyer asks

A couple moving to the city open AI Mode and type: "We want a two-bed near good schools, within our budget and with an agent who handles first-time buyers. Who should we talk to?" Then they ask two follow-up questions about fees and timing.

What AI Mode answers

A few paragraphs on the areas, a note on typical fees and a short list of three agencies with a sentence each and a link. The agencies named all have a page per neighbourhood, a plain fees page and recent reviews that mention first-time buyers. The agency with the glossy homepage and nothing else is not in the answer, and nobody scrolled to find it.

How to check it on your site

Five checks, all free.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 5 checked on your site.

  1. Ask it the buyer's question

Open Google, switch to the AI Mode tab and type the question a customer would ask before choosing you, with your area in it. Read the whole answer. A good result names you or links a page of yours. A bad one names three competitors and never mentions you.

  2. Ask three ways

Rephrase the question twice: shorter, then as a comparison. AI Mode rebuilds the answer each time. If you appear in one phrasing out of three, you are on the edge. If you appear in none, the pages it needs do not exist yet.

  3. Look at who gets cited and why

Open the sources it links. Note what those pages have that yours do not: a clear service page per area, a fees page, named people, dated reviews. That list is your to-do list.

  4. Check Search Console for the shift

AI Mode visits are counted in the ordinary web report in Search Console, not separately. Watch for longer, question-shaped queries appearing in Performance. They are a sign your pages are being pulled into conversations.

  5. Run the free checker

Our AI visibility checker asks the main AI tools about a business and shows whether and how it is mentioned. It is a snapshot, not a ranking, but it tells you where you stand today.
