AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI assistants and Google's AI answers mention or recommend your business when someone asks a question you could answer. It is the AI-search equivalent of rankings, except there is no fixed position to hold, only a share of the answers that name you, and that share changes with every phrasing.

Measuring it means asking the tools the same set of questions on a schedule and recording whether you are named, what is said and which page is linked. Paid tools do this at scale. For a small business, ten questions a month asked by hand, or our free checker, is enough to see the trend.

Short version: how often the AI tools say your name, and what they say.
Why it matters for your business

You cannot manage
what nobody has measured.

Rankings told you where you stood. AI answers do not, unless you ask. A store can be invisible in every AI recommendation for its own product category and never know, because nothing in Analytics shows the sales that went to the shop that was named instead. The first job is simply to find out.

What you are being sold: "AI visibility packages" and dashboards with a score. A score is useful only if you know which questions it was built from and can see the actual answers. Ask for both. The work that moves the score is the same as GEO: clear pages, named people, consistent details, reviews and mentions on sites the tools trust.

Expect the number to wobble. The tools change models, sources and phrasing. Judge the trend over a quarter, not the answer on a Tuesday, and treat any guarantee of a mention as a red flag.

Example

A Shopify candle store
nobody's assistant mentions.

What the owner asks

The owner of a small soy candle store asks ChatGPT and Perplexity "best soy candles for a housewarming gift that ship this week". Then the same for "eco-friendly candles" and finally for the brand by name.

What comes back

The gift question names four brands, all with a page per occasion, a shipping-times page and reviews on sites outside their own store. The eco question names three, two of them the same. The brand-name question describes the store correctly, so it is known, just never chosen. Writing a gifting guide, a plain shipping page and getting listed in two gift roundups changed the second month's answers. That is AI visibility, measured and then moved.

How to check it on your site

Four checks, all free.

Tick each one as you go. 0 of 4 checked on your site.

  1. Write down ten questions

List the ten questions a customer asks before buying from you, including two comparisons and two with your city or niche. These are your test set. Keep them the same every month.

  2. Ask three tools in fresh chats

Put each question to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in a new chat, no history. Record whether you are named, in what position and what was said. A good month shows you in more answers than last month. A bad one shows a competitor in every answer you are missing from.

  3. Check what they say when asked directly

Ask "what do you know about [your business name]". Wrong hours, an old address or a service you stopped offering means the tools are reading stale sources. Fix the source, usually a directory or your Google Business Profile.

  4. Run the free checker

Our AI visibility checker does the first pass for you: it asks the main tools about a business and shows the answers. Save the result and run it again next quarter.
